Save the planet

Earth Hour just ended! There, just one hour without the lights, and that wasn't too difficult right. And I am so into it that my lights in the house were not on since 6pm, and its not even on now, haha. For the hour, I refrained from using my lappie, sop just watch TV. I wanted to try to do something that used less electricity. Initially I wanted to off the TV as well, to show my total support, but it was really boring, haha. Everything else in my house was off. Really felt great aboout it. And for once in a long long time, I could see so many stars in our skies. For those who look at the sky often, you'll find that it is not easy to see the stars in cities, because the amount of lights in the city will make star sightings difficult. But tonight, when I looked into the sky, there were stars up there. Many, many of them. It was really beautiful. The last time I managed to see so many stars was on an overnight train in Europe, and the train was moving through the country-side (ie no lamps, and very little light). I hope this really drives the message to everyone to support energy conservation, and say no to climate change. I'm definately no saint or Miss World wannabe, but really think that this 'save the earth' message is a very important one for everyone. And it is something that everyone can practice in their everyday life. I must say that it did disturb me a little when I looked out of the window and still see so many homes not participating (deep inside I was like "hello people, its Earth Hour. Haven't you been watching TV. Switch off your lights people"), maybe they think that the energy their home is using is insignificant, but I can tell you that every little bit counts, just one switch can go a long way. I do think that the government can do a little more to drive the message across to the people, esp to those in the heartland. (1) Put up posters on the HDB hotice boards (2) engage students to do house visits to encourage people to off their lights during Earth hour (students now have community service thingy right, just award a few points for those who participate) (3) during Earth hour, HDB can arrange to switch off alternate lights along the corridoor (don't have to off everything, but alternate the lighting to dim the area, so that residents will realise that something is on going). I think that since the message is to be brought to everyone, some little efforts can be done to promote the idea to the heartlanders. Because ultimately switching off iconics is only a national publicity, and if the message is not driven across, then the entire hour is probably wasted. Just my thoughts.

Earth hour

Today marks a very interesting event that is really helpful to the world that we live in. Its none other than Earth Hour. And this year Earth hour is today 29 Mar 2009, from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. I just read that this event was started in Sydney in 2007 and now many other countries have followed Sydney's suite, turning the event into a yearly world event that will be held on the last saturday of March. For this event, organisations, homes, countries, icons etc are encouraged to switch off their lightings at 8.30 pm, for a total of 1 hour. Given the huge population of the world now, the amount of energy that the world is using up is super, so this not only helps to cut down the energy used up by the world for that 1 hour, it also drives across the message for every country and individual to do his part to help save our Earth. From the news, I hear that about 82 countries ans 2100 cities have already pledged to contribute to this great cause, and many iconic buildings and monuments (including the Sydney Oprah House and the Beijing Birds' nest stadium) will join in to drive the message across to the world population. Singapore is also stepping up its role in this event this year. This year more than 500 companies, government organisations, shopping centres and monuments will participate in the event (I think its about 500, from the list it looks like about that number). I personally think this is a very very good move. It is important for everyone to understand his role towards the health of the world. Switching off just one light bulb might not save a lot of energy, but when 10000000 people switch off 1 light bulb each, the amount of energy saved is really unimaginable. Not only does this conserve energy, it will also greatly reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emission. I, for one will definately take part in the exercise tonight, and I also urge everyone else to do the same. The lights will only be off for 1 hour, I'm sure you won't die because of 1 hour withour TV, Lights and air-con. But what I want to bring forward is also for everyone to carry on the effort to save energy. Don't let this be just a 1 hour event, whenever and wherever possible, switch off your electrical appliances to conserve the energy. Let us do our part to help alivate the pain on our planet. Kudos to the world.

Some interesting facts about Earth Hour:
- Started in Sydney in 2007
- Held on the last Saturday of March every year
- The first city to start Earth Hour in 2009 is Chatham Islands, New Zealand
- Dubai is the first Arab city to pledge to participate in Earth Hour
- In 2008, Google gave Earth Hour free publicity. The Google homepage in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, Ireland and the UK was turned to a black background. Their tagline is, "We've turned the lights out. Now it's your turn - Earth Hour." But Google has stated that they will not repeat this in 2009.

Ok I got all my information online, example wikipedia, so I'm not responsible if I accidentally mistype any information. Anyway if you're interested to know more about this great event, please go google it.

第一次

This week marks a few first again. Let me began with my Japanese class. I've changed school to the one at Hougang, so this week is the start of my elementary 2 class. The class is ok, I like the teacher in that she makes us speak and read out, but of course there are a few things that I think can be done better. (1) I think the class size is a little too big. There are about 20 students in the class. My previous school had only about 10-12 students in the class, which I think is better because you get more attention (2) The teacher is really speaking too fast, half the time I'm guessing what she is asking me. She can go yahda yahda yahda.... and I would be like wtf... It would really help if she can speak a little slower (3) I don't how the school taught the elementary 1 class, but it seems that they expect the students to know some kanji. I can't really recognise kanji yet. Yup so there are a few kinks, this course is much more demanding than my previous school, so I will have to go revise my work if I want to catch up with the rest.

Next, yesterday marks the first time I'm meeting clients. It wasn't as scary as what I had thought it out to be, but also because I didn't do any presentation at all. The person who should be dealing with my product was busy so he didn't come for the meeting. In the end I only made a very very very very very brief introduction to the product. Will be going to see another client this afternoon, I don't know if I should hope that I get to present or wish that he would be as busy as the guy yesterday. I mean I am excited to present my product but also a little scard that I might fumble and say something inappropriate. Well keeping my fingers crossed.

Yet another decision to make

Just came back to office today, only to find out that both my in-charge are not in. Damn, I had no idea what to do. Then when my Aunt came in she told me some ground breaking news. The company wants to hire a new sales engineer, and one of my boss has recommended me. But my Uncle felt that I was too 'soft' to be in sales, and fear that I might be 'eaten up' by the clients. So my Aunt wants me to think about the offer first and emphasize that it is most important that I like the job scope before I take up the offer. Of course, the pay package will be different than my current contact pay, with more benefits and vehicle & petrol allowance (if I'm driving). I don't know yet, I'm still thinking about it. I mean I came into this company not intending to stay long. I only gave myself 1 year in this company and when the economy picks up, I'll fuck off. That was the plan all this while, then suddenly this came. Well, you do know about my reservations about working with relatives, so I don't know if I really want to continue with this. But I must say that so far, we haven't had any 'public disputes' and our relationship has yet to be stained, its just that I don't know how long it will last. Just give me a few more days to think about it first. For now, I have to prepare my inaugural presentation to clients because my uncle wants me to start meeting clients to gather feedback and to spur interest in our battery. So I guess I'll be rehearsing my presentation for the rest of the day.

Tonight, Shun wants to meet me for dinner. But I really don't want to meet him individually because I know that he wants to talk to me about insurance and I had already bought a plan from Gab not too long ago. I haven't thought of how to break the news to him. Mainly because he was the first to approach me. Makes me wonder whether I should have told him that I had started work already. Sometimes its just difficult.

Hitched

Not me of course. Its Anthony and Meizhi, they've been together for 7 years already, and they have now exchanged vows and will live as one from now on. Congratulations to the both of you, here's wishing the two of you a very happy and blissful marriage. Another one of my friends just tied the knot, its already like the 101st friend getting married. I must say that these occasions can be very happy plus a tinge of sadness. Of course I'm very happy for the couple, to take this step to live together of the rest of your life is a huge commitment, so I'm really really happy for them to move onto this next phase in their relationship, but looking back at myself. I'm already 26, I do not have a partner, and I can't help but think to myself that I'll probably stay single for the rest of my life. Haiz. Its always after attending these ceremonies that I'll start to think to myself that maybe its time I try a little harder to get together with someone and move to another phase of my life (just the relationship part). Sometimes I do question myself whether I really will die lonely without anyone by my side. But I really do not want to get into a relationship just for the sake of getting into a relationship. They always say that we should get together with someone we cannot live without, someone whom you know that you'll love for the rest of your life, and I really haven't found this person yet. Other than my parents and some relatives, who I know I will love for the rest of my life, I haven't felt this same kind of love for another person. When I see a woman, its usually the friendship-love kind of love and not the love-love kind of love, if you know what I mean. Well I guess I can only wait now, and see how my future unfolds. People who know me will probably know that I don't like to make plans for the future, I'd prefer to let nature take its course and let the future unfold itself. All I can say is good luck to myself. Once again, let me congratulate Anthony and Meizhi on their very special day.

Let me just add a little of my happenings for this weekend. I had a very packed weekend, so packed that it has gotten me pretty tired now, totally drained of energy. I had already bloged about friday, so I won't touch on that. Yesterday I had my usual dragonboat training at Kallang. We had quite a session, we did the row with tyres attached to the boat. The weight and resistance of the the tyre really made the rowing tough, much tougher than usual. Did a total of 5 sets of rowing (6-8-10-8-6 mins). After training I had to rush down to Sentosa to meet Alvin and gang for a beach gathering. YM is the organiser for this outing. It was only when I reached there that I realise that not many people were coming. Basket, maybe I should have skipped it as well. But then again, it has been a long time since I went to Sentosa, and you can really see the changes to the place. The beach was pretty crowded with loads of hot bods around. But the weather was that great, so we only had a few minutes of sun before gloomy clouds came. So after wasting my entire afternoon at Sentosa, I had to return home and immediately changed my clothing before rushing out to Boat Quay to meet CY and gang for drinks. CY had said that he wanted to relive the good old drinking days, so we agreed to drink without (much) consideration of cost, haha. Its been quite sometime since I had drunk so much alcohol, and as usual I woke up feeling guilty of the entire session, haha. But I must say that we really had loads of fun. Of course after the drinking session, my entire sunday was wasted resting at home before going to the wedding dinner. I still have a meeting with my RT group tomorrow morning. Think I'll come home immediately after the meeting to sleep. I really need a good long sleep to replenish all the hours that I've lost throughout the entire week. Okie, time for bed now, zzzzzzz.

Back from camp

Just finished my ICT today. It was a really difficult week, been exercising with the trainees for the entire week, with very little sleep. I was appointed one of the lead trainers for this camp, so I had to oversee the training program for the entire camp, making sure that everything is in place, from the training schedule to the food to the safety of the trainees, I'm involved in all of them. So I had to be practically present in all of their activities. And not to mention that I slept after 3 am for most of them days (because we went out for dinner, supper, jalan jalan, ktv, hahaha.... yes I know its my own fault for the late nights). So you see, it was a really really exhausting week. And I even had a to do a report on the camp every night, luckily there was another lead trainer who helped me with the report. Overall I had loads of fun in camp.

After the camp, I went home to sleep for a while before meeting Alvin, Dennis and Wee Hwa for dinner and movie at Bugis. Its been quite a while since I met them (excluding Alvin). The last time I saw Dennis was at his house warming, and I can't even remember when was the last time I saw Wee Hwa, so it was really nice to see them again. We had Ayam Paniak (I think its spelt like this) at this stall opposite Shaw towers. Its basically a form of malay chicken rice. The chicken was really crispy and the chili was good. Very spicy and very fragrant. But the serving was a little small. Could do with a little more rice (it looked like only 1/2 a bowl) and a few more pieces of chicken. The most interesting part of this stall is that it serves the chicken with some crispy flakes of I-don't-know-what on top. Whatever that was, it was really nice, haha. Chat a little before heading to the cinema to catch the movie 'Mall Cap'. The movie was nice, it wasn't great, but it was a easy movie to watch. Pretty funny at times (typical Adam Sandler type of move [I think its written/directed by him, I just know there some connection between him and the show]). I mean I didn't go to watch this movie expecting a great movie, so I was satisfied with some laughs in the show.

And before I forget, we were talking about reservist during dinner, and Alvin mention that he'd rather be in office than go for reservist. Dennis had no comments about it. So I thought I'd want to blog about this. Of course whatever I blog here are my own thoughts, some people (ormaybe many people) will have differing views on this issue. To me, I don't understand why people would not like reservist. Unless you are a boss of a company, or that you really have very important things to do everyday, then I have nothing much to say. But as an employee, don't you think reservist is a great way to release your work stress. I mean, one entire year of work, staring at computer screens and meeting clients, don't you think have a little time away from all that once in a while will do you good. Thats also the reason why people want to go for holidays right, to get away from work. I find reservist a very relaxing event, although I have to exercise a lot during reservist, but I really enjoy myself during the periods. I don't deny that due to the nature of my reservist, the flexibility might be a little more appealing, but in general I still think its a good getaway from your daily routine. As I mentioned, most of us are only employees, no matter how high a position you are holding, you are still just an employee, and let me just add that no one in this world in indispensible. The company will not collasp because one person. Of course since I say that no one is indispensible, so it means that the company can sack you while you are on reservist because you are not in office to work. But lets be realistic, if you are the boss of a company you will not sack your employee just because he is away for a week or two. The only reason that you'll be sacked is because you have not been performing in your work for quite some time. So don't put the blame on reservist. I'm not here to promote reservist, I'm not even in the civil service, but I just feel that some times reservist has been treated unjustly, and maybe some people should just go with a open mind and really enjoy the time off given to all Singaporean males. I seriously think that everyone needs some time away from the usual work life, from your office, even from your regular friends, relatives, colleagues, girlfriend, spouse and children. It gives us the opportunity to recharge ourselves, and I think this will help to improve our productivity and even strengthen our relationships. Why not give a thought about it.

PhotoFunia

Its raining now, and I'm bored at home, so I'm gonna post some photos that I've done with this great website (www.photofunia.com). Its really quite cool, you can upload your photos onto the site and they can transpose the pics onto this cool backgrounds. Yes, I know I'm late again, this has been around for ages already, and a gazillion people have done it already, but better late than never right. Haha. K enjoy the pics =)

Pretty cool right! There are a lot more designs to choose from, I'm gonna go on and have a little more fun with this, you guys have fun too. =)

1-4

That the score line for yesterday's match between Man Utd and Liverpool (Liverpool won btw). So all you liverpool fans must be screaming now, haha. Well, its been a while since they last managed to win a big club by such a margin. I'm not a Liverpool fan neither am I a Man Utd fan, I'm neutral, haa.

Went over to Adrian's place for the match last night. It has been a long while since I saw him (ever since Vanessa got pregnant, and now she's already close to giving birth. Its that long). It was supposed to be a get-together+soccer match+pot-luck, so everyone had to bring something to eat. I was shopping at the supermarket not knowing what to buy. Initially I wanted to just buy 2 packets of mac and cheeze from Sheng Siong, but when I went there the boxes were missing. I was like 'oh fuck, now what am I gonna do'. So I was walking aimlessly around Sheng Siong and Shop 'n' Save, trying to figure out what can I whip up in an hour (I was running really late, its was already 5.30 then, I was supposed to meet them at 7.30). At first I thought of cheeze cake, then jello cheeze cake, but I couldn't decide. So as I was walking in S 'n'S, I saw this instant crepe skins, and then I saw durian. Ah-ha, Durian crepes! Great idea for a great snack. But I was kinda turn off by the little amount of durian I can buy with $10 (need to ration my $$, hoo), so I continued looking for an alternative to durian. Then at Sheng Siong I found something else - mangos. Yes, thats it.... Mango crepes. So I got a kilo of Mangos some whip cream and the crepes. Then, it had to happen. Rain, no... I mean downpour. Shit, I was stuck at Loyang point. In desperation, I put my pouch into the plastic bag and cycled throught the rain all the way home. And god was it cold. The rain + the wind wasn't that great a combi when ya drenched in it. I was shivering in the rain, and the best part of it was that I had to be stuck in a traffic light. It was only supposed to be 10 seconds, but those 10 seconds seem like it'll never end, probably one of the longest 10 seconds in my life, haha. Well finally got through and reached home, dripping wet. Put down my stuff and rushed to make my crepes (and of course message alvin that I'll be late for the match).

Reached Adrian's place (in case ya confused, Adrian is Alvin elder bro) just before 9. and immediately put my crepes in the freezer. I did not put enough cream, so it was a little 'wet'. Generally got pretty good reviews of my crepes, other than its a little too sweet (think I put too much sugar, ha). Think I'm becoming Bree of desperate housewives, haha, I have to make the perfect desert of a gathering (did I mention that I've finished the season 5 of DH, well on that I've cleared the entire season, but I'm up to date at 16 now).

Heard from then that today is Ka-poh's ROM. He's sort of a mutal friend, but I don't really know him very well. hung out a few time with him before. He's Alvin's group of sec school friends. So all of them have been designated his 'brother' for his wedding, haha. After the match, all of them had to hurry home and sleep because they had to wake up early to help him with the ROM/wedding stuff. Yup, its a very rushed preparation, mainly because its shot-gun. Hahaha, another one who claims that he had used protection (or maybe he did, but it wasn't of good quality, hahaha). Well anyway, all the best to him and his wife-to-be (and child-to-have).

I'll be going down to East Coat later to meet YL and ZR at ZR's shop @ Big Splash (or is it called playgroung now). They are going jogging! And the catch is we'll be wear ZR's hopping shoe thingy (I have no idea what is it called). Okie I just googled it, its called kangroo jumps. Think it'll be fun =), So I'm gonna try my hands (or legs) at it too.

Thats how it looks like. Pretty cool huh. Heard from ZR that its not that cheap. An average pair can set you back at $400+.

Well it seems that YL is on an intensive weight loss+muscle gain program. Hear he's been exercising a lot lately. Good for him. I have my fair share of exercise. Will be at Ulu Pandan for the entire of next week. Reservist again. Come to think of it, I better go get my stuff and check if I need to buy any stuff for the camp.

Friday the 13th

Today is friday the 13th, and you know what, I figured that there are actually 3 friday the 13th this year, haha. Interesting right. Well anyway met my GIP mates today for dinner and drinks at Emerald Hill Number 5. Cool place (actually been there with my MS clicks before). Just sat and chat and ate, had a great time with them though. Its been quite a while since I met them, I miss their clubbing at Zouk and Zirca previously, so it was really nice to catch up with them again. Glad to know that everyoneis doing fine (well at the least the few of us are, hoo). I must comment that the babes at No. 5 are pretty hot, quite a few hot OLs around, definately a good change to looking at the 'aunties' at my office, hahaha (luckily they won't be reading this, but they are really nice people, always offereing me food in office). Didn't take any pictures though, no camera.

As for my job, its going pretty ok. I just submitted my catalog and all the drawings and stuff for them to vet. I'll be on reservist next week, so its one week off for me, haha. I;ve already told the office that I can come back if they really need me to, but I doubt they'll call me at all, so see them in a weeks time, hoo.

Blood group characteristics

Was looking my inbox and I found these cartoons sent by John quite some time ago. Well it was marked as unread, so you can guess that I don't read all my mails, haa. But I think I'm not the worst around, I only have235 mails marked as unread, thats not as bad as alot of people right? Anyway these snipets are talking about the characters of different blood groups. Pretty interesting.

Happy times

I find that my blog has been pretty gloomy lately, so I've decided that I should start to blog about some things that are more happy. And to start it off, I've decided to post a few (yes just a few, there are just too many of them) of the long overdue Europe grad trip photos, haa. Okie, enjoy =)

First up are the fun times we had on top of the Swiss mountains, Mount Titlis. We were so not prepared for snow, so our clothes weren't very thick. Had so much fun still, we made a mini snowman (that looked like it getting strangled by my scarf, hoot), and also play snow tubing countless times. Also took the ski cable thingy to look at the scenery (there wasn't much to see, all white because the snow was pretty heavy, everywhere was so misty, haa). You should have seen us on the mountain, we were like kids looking at snow for the very first time, we were so excited!

Well this is easily recognisable, the London Eye (obviously in London). London was our last stop of the trip. The place was actually really fun but it little too rainy. The time we went was near summer but summer there was really cold, haa. The 'breeze' at night (esp where I took this photo) made my whole body shiver.

This was taken at Heathrow Airport, London. Just before we boarded the plane back to Bangkok. Will try to post more of my trip's pics, and share the happy times we had then with everyone.

Life's uncertainities

This is the first time I'm blogging during work. Well finish my stuff, now awaiting for my in-charged to vet through my work and advise me on how I can improve on it. Well the purpose of blogging now is really because of a very sad news that I got this morning. My heart is feeling quite low after hearing this tragic news.

This morning my IA supervisor MSN me:

IA: Hey, SL is that you?
Me: Hi, long time no see?
Me: How are you doing now?
IA: Do you remember He QingHua, the engineer at WGQ?
Me: Yah
Me: Y?
IA: She passed away last night
Me: Huh?
Me: What happened?
IA: In late 07, they found a tumor near her heart, and now God has taken her to be with him
...

After hearing this news, for a moment I did not know how to react. She was such a nice person. Very young and smiley, energetic, full of life and bubbly. And who would know that such a thing would befall on her. During my time in office, she taught me so much, and she was constantly upgrading herself. Someone with so much dreams and ambition, I even heard that was thinking of getting married and all that, but now it has all come to an end. I've only left Shanghai for approximately 2 yrs and so much has happened. Life is so unpredictable, I really feel that everyone needs to grab life and make the best of their time in this world. I mean anything can happen to anyone. It doesn't matter how young or old you are, how rich or poor you are, or how educated you are. Once your time in this world is up, you have to go. After I left Shanghai, I even told myself that after I start working, I will make sure that I go back to visit all of them again and catch up with all of them, haiz. This is quite a wake up call for me as well, that I must appreciate the people around me more, and to make the best of my life. Who would know if I would collapse tomorrow.

Busy as a bee

Have been pretty busy in office lately. My uncle has been putting pressure on me to push me to produce the summary catalog as soon as possible. And then he wants me to go meet clients and sell and convince them that our batteries are really good. Well, I haven't even used or tested the batteries myself, on top of the fact that I do not have experience selling yet. It really makes it quite difficult for me. Largely because I don't know how to start. I mean what should I say first. Should I greet them first, should I give a very smily approach, should I have a more serious look, what should I say??? So many unknowns, I just hope I can get through. Been pretty tired from work, falling asleep almost as soon as I reach home, and barely being able to wake up in the morning.

Well, another news is that I am starting to venture into the world of stocks and shares soon. Still looking through the papers and the internet to understand all these financial stuff more. Hopefully I'll be able to earn some bonus soon, lol.
